Possession (1981)

Friday Feb 03, 2023
Welcome back to a premiere+ episode of the SHUDcast! We know all of our episodes are premiere+ in our hearts, but it isn’t every week we come across a film that divides a room as interestingly as this one. That’s right, we’re talking one of the holy grails of ‘80s video nasties – POSSESSION. Which side do the guys fall on? Which of us thinks it’s a masterpiece? Which of us thinks it’s like a newly divorced friends’ amateur black box theater bit? Will Lucas be ok? Listen and find out!
00:00 - 08:00ish Intros - SHUDcast sick remedies (we’re not doctors and we hardly pretend to be them, so please don’t take anything we say seriously) and under which circumstances we’ll do witch drugs.
8:00ish - 49:00ish - What we watched this time!
–Curtis: The Taylor Sheridan-verse - Tulsa King, Yellowstone - The Last of Us, Violent Night, and They/Them.
–Austin: Sick, Troll, Moana, The Murmuring and Pickman’s Model (from Cabinet of Curiosities), and Jurassic World: Dominion
Cody: Videodrome (4k director’s cut – w/ Lucas), Rambo, and That ‘70s Show.
Lucas: Videodrome, Super Mario Bros., You People, The Hunter, and Physical 100.
49:00ish - 1:55:00ish - POSSESSION (1981) SHUDdown and discussion.
1:55:00ish - End - Our next movie (and a note about what our next episode will actually be)

Puppet Master

Friday Jan 20, 2023
Happy first episode recorded in 2023! We’d love to tell you we’re coming in all “new year, new us”, but f*ck that… that’s not why you’re here. You’re not here to listen to us grow and change and all that nonsense. No way. How about “New year, worse us” (thanks, Lucas). Look, all I’m trying to say is that we hadn’t recorded in a while and we had a lot of movies to catch up on and also tonight’s movie, um… didn’t bear us the longest fruit. So tune in for some wild and erratic opinions on things that mostly have to do with horror and stick around for a little puppet-y after party! Bonus points for clocking just how long Cody goes without realizing him we’re trying to get him to transition into tonight’s film. We’re back, nerds!
00:00 - 5:16ish Intros: How we think copyright works, and some out there therapeutic methodology.
5:16-sih - 1:11:00ish - What we watched! Lucas - Vesper, Bullet Train (and the story of how this thing is available is f*cked), Drive My Car, The Northman (again), The Black Phone, Resurrection, Butcher Baker Nightmare Maker, The Baby, White Noise (2022), The Menu, and Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio. Cody - Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio, Slumberland, The Raid, The Viewing, The Runner, Austin - Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio, Blood Machines, Don’t Worry Darling, Resurrection, Dashcam, The Church, The History of the Occult, Night of the Zombies, and The Whale, and M3gan. Austin - Barbarian (again), Krampus, the first three Harry Potters, Beast, and Avatar: The Way of Water (all of us together!). Curtis - Hook, The Fabelmans, Twin Peaks, Jurassic World: Dominion, The Mothman Prophecies, The Fourth Kind, Evil Dead (2013), Crimes of the Future (I hoodwinked Jess), Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood, Babylon (FUCK YES), Sick, and M3gan. Oh, also The Last of Us.
1:11:00ish - 1:43:00ish Puppet Master SHUDdown and discussion (check out the early business where we fool Cody for a record amount of time during our transition)
1:43:00ish - End - Our next movie!

Friday Jan 06, 2023
Happy 2023 SHUD-dy Buddies! We’re sailing over the roiling seas once again to Indonesia where we revisit one of our most favorite filmmakers, Joko Anwar, and his new flick, SATAN’S SLAVES 2: COMMUNION. We haven’t been more excited for a release since, well, Joko’s last movie so color us stoked! We also get into some of our final watches of 2022 which leads up to our Year in Re-Spew, which is already out! Check that bad boy out if you haven’t already.
00:00 - 16:10ish - Intros: Cody declares that he will be the first Academy Award-winning Best Boy, Cody’s insane use of Letterboxd, Curtis hates January (except for the body horror one we did a couple years ago), and Oscar bait movies that lose relevance.
16:10ish - 60:00ish What we watched this time! Lucas - Pepsi Where’s My Jet?, and Scrooged. Austin - Arrival, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Curtis - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: The Secret of the Ooze, Barbarian (again, I know), Smile, and Nightbreed (The Director’s Cut). Curtis & Cody: The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Eaten Alive (on film at the New Beverly Cinema!!). Cody - The Menu, A Christmas Story Christmas, Spirited (sorta), and The Grinch (2018).
60:00ish - 1:42:00ish SATAN’S SLAVES 2: COMMUNION - SHUDdown and discussion.
1:42:00ish - End - Our next movie!

Shuddy Shudd-idays!! It’s a horror-days special as we take a break from our regularly scheduled Shudder discoveries to recap our 2022 horror experiences! What a f*cking year it was too… We each present our top ten horror movies released in 2022. What is Austin’s number one? How many times will Curtis try to cheat? Did Lucas change his list after we recorded this? And just how high will Cody be ranking Terrifier 2?
Thank you all so much for continuing to listen or hopping on Santa’s Slay for this episode! We truly enjoy bringing these shows to you and we can’t wait to do it even more in the coming year!

Friday Dec 09, 2022
We all may be in the thick of our holiday merriment, but we’ve got some Halloween closure to tend to (as if it ever really closes). There is an extensive list of titles that we all watched before this episode which we think makes for a pretty killer group of recommendations! And then after all of that, we head back to a country and filmmaking family near and dear to our demonic hearts – Italy. Or Germany? But maybe American? Who knows… That’s correct, we’re back with the Bavas and Argentos for a devilish double feature of DEMONS & DEMONS 2!
00:00 - 19:30ish Intros - We discuss our mixology talents (or lack thereof), we show you how to blind click into our podcast on your phone, how Elon Musk is an actual fool (are there Elon stans out there? Are you surprised we think he’s dumb?), stuff we did in spooky season, and Be-WAUGH-nd Fest (Curtis’ birthday film festival extravaganza! He even put together a trailer for it which is so painfully Curtis it hurts and you can check it out HERE).

Bird Boy: The Forgotten Children
Friday Nov 11, 2022
Friday Nov 11, 2022
Back with our regularly scheduled programming....BIRD BOY, the cartoon I know I needed when I was a child. Other important tidbits: Curtis' obsession with Roadhouse; The Northman: The Musical; superheroes - we're digging into it friends. Enjoy. We love you.
00:00 - 13:40ish Intros: Happy post Halloween! We discuss how we always assume we’ve all made it to the release of these since we record them in advance so naturally we talk about who might die first! Lucas has exploits and we discuss how we’re feeling about being in the THICK of Halloween.
13:40ish - 53:35ish What we watched! Surprisingly few things because we were prepping for October… Cody watched Shang Chi (and please pardon Curtis doing Curtis things and going over his 10 favorite super-movies and we talk about how small directors get big gigs so it’s all still pretty interesting we hope!), Austin watched Titane and one episode of Rings of Power, Lucas watched The Shining, Curtis also watched Titane, Demons, and Road House (one of the best movies ever made), and then Cody and Lucas went and saw The Northman: The Musical aka Heilung!
53:45ish - 1:31:30ish Bird Boy: The Forgotten Children - SHUDdown and discussion

Friday Oct 28, 2022
It’s here. The day and episode you’ve all been waiting for: HALLOWEEN. Enjoy the culmination of your spooky season with John Carpenter’s classic that started it all. This is the first title we’ve double covered, having done a deep, deep dive into the Halloween series during our inaugural HallowStream in 2020 but dammit this one deserves it! Listen as we unpack what this movie and what John Carpenter in general mean to us and our lives because, let’s face it, without this movie none of us may not even be here. Like, figuratively…
00:00 - 37:20ish Intros: We dive into AI art, people that think we sound the same (do we? Really, we wanna know), opinions on candy corn and our favorite Halloween candies, and Spooky Season watchlists.
37:20ish - Recent watches! Barbarian, Pearl, Hellraiser (1987) & Hellraiser 2 (35mm American Cinematheque), She-Hulk, Falcon and the Winter Soldier (we know, Curtis was catching up), Marianne, Who Invited Them?, Trick ‘r Treat (be prepared for a lot of this this month), Spider-Man 3, Mortal Kombat (2021), Pearl, Men (Austin got to it!), Get Out (Austin’s dad had never seen!), X, You’re Next, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, Jaws (in 3D, not Jaws 3D), The Hateful Eight Extended Edition,
1:16:20ish - 1:27:00ish A nice discussion of how people approach movies and discuss them and the differences we have with each other. A NICE discussion (also Lucas watched Nope again)!
1:27:00ish - 2:21:00ish HALLOWEEN (1978) - SHUDdown and discussion.
2:21:00ish - End Our next movie!

We take a step a week back in time as the October SHUDcast Shuntathon continues! Before we decided to give you a full slate of episodes in October, we selected Prince of Darkness to cover and release unknowingly on its 35th anniversary! Happy birthday to this underrated gem from our favorite master of horror!
00:00 - 24:00ish Intros: What constitutes a “staff pick” being displayed in our homes and Crash vs Cannibal Holocaust.

The Thing
Friday Oct 14, 2022
Friday Oct 14, 2022
Whoa! Time jump! Spoilers for the end of the episode you were SUPPOSED to get before this one. We went ahead and selected John Carpenter’s The Thing, thus rounding out his Apocalypse Trilogy. We loved the poetry of releasing Prince of Darkness on the actual 35th anniversary of the film (something we honestly didn’t plan for before finding that out) so much that we decided to keep that release schedule and bump this one up a week in your month long October SHUDcast Shuntathon! Make sense? No? All good.
00:00 - 10:20ish Intros: Austin went to Alaska (aka the most Cody place ever), and it was very hot in September and we complain about it.
10:20ish - 1:05:35ish What we watched since the last time: Dark Skies, Barry, Bodies Bodies Bodies (Lucas x2), Sorry to Bother You, Looper, Haunt, Joker (the room splits right down the f*ckin middle), Orphan & Orphan: First Kill, Three Thousand Years of Longing, Jaws (Curtis went twice in the theater!), Tumbbad, Jungle, Brockmire, Cody watched 16 MCU flicks because he watched them in chronological (story) order, The Watcher, The Jordan Peele filmography, The Satanic Rites of Dracula, Men, The Invitation (2022), Beast, The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power, and GoT: HoTD.
1:05:35ish - 2:07:20ish John Carpenter’s THE THING - Shiny new SHUDdown and discussion (and also the 2001 prequel, inexplicably also called THE THING)
2:07:20ish - End Our next movie after our October onslaught!
